Colour & Light

Figuring light, Colour and The Intangible
Exhibition at Djanogly Art Gallery, Lakeside

After visiting the Figuring light, Colour and the intangible exhibition last week (when I eventually found the place!), there were many different pieces of work that interested me. The one that most attracted me was one by Rebecca Partridge called ‘Dreaming’ shown in the picture. The artist has used different oval shapes and sizes mixed together to get the effect that the shapes to the middle of the painting are further away than the others. The reason this image appealed to me the most was because as I looked closely to the painting I realised that only the colours red, blue and green were used but other colours are emerged as they overlap existing ones. Rebecca Partridge has only used this technique in this piece of work.
Different tints and tones have been used for the shapes and the directions of these shapes are shown cleverly as if they are spinning around, therefore pulling you into the picture. Also, more shapes are gathered towards the center of the piece, which immediately draws attention to the centre where it is just black. As all the shapes get closer to the centre, the stronger the colour and light of them is shown, adding a more bold effect to the art. To aid this the artist uses a dark coloured black background to get the most emphasis from all the colours she has used.
At a first glance of the image, it is like a tunnel and as you go further down the colours become brighter hence the name of this piece which is ‘Dreaming’; it is as you are dreaming to a better future which is more happy and brighter and things can be seen more clearly.
The artist has used colour and light in this piece of work to a very unique way, and mixing different colours to get various blends and tones, therefore making us focus on certain parts of the image more due to this.

The Rule Of Thirds

The Rule Of Thirds 2

Just thought i'd do a second video ...

Appeal of an object

I was asked the question 'What goes on in your head when you buy something new?'

1) Why is it that we want our belongings to do more for us than to function well?

I am going to base this on my mobile phone which is a Samsung X830. The main function of a mobile is to make calls, however the reason i got this was specifically due to the design and the way it looked. As well as this i got it as it had a 1GB internal memory facility. The phone also had a slide function, which turned into an MP3 player.

I believe people buy products due to how they look, what functions they have, and what the user can get out of it. However, we want our belongings to do more than their function, we want them to stand out with their individual aspects which set it apart from other products just like it. We want a product which looks good, functions good and makes us feel good also therefore reflecting how we are as a person.
A mobile can be bought very cheaply, yet it does the same function as all the others; but what we want is the latest design which both looks and functions well. The idea we have in our heads in that the more a phone is worth, the better it is going to be; which mostly is the case.

I also think we want our products to do more as there is a lot more technology available now which will undoubtedly progress further. Therefore, the expectations we have are to a more higher standard. For example, Satellite navigation is available on many mobile phones and we will expect this to be a normal function on mobile phones in the near future.

Our Pixilation Film

This is our Pixilation film we did. This was designed by Umar Hussain, Tebby Moeki, Dan Everitt and Karan Bhalla. The only problem i faced was cutting down the time of each image to be played and fitting everything in, therefore i had to do this with each individual image; which was time consuming. Here is the finished piece, hope you like it!

Assignment 1 – The Microsoft Surface (Multi-Touch Technology)

Write a 300 - 500 word article that tells the audience about a recent multimedia technology that is being or has been developed in the last six months and explain what you think the impact of this technology will have upon society.

Computer users of the future could use gestures and mind control, as well as touch to use and control a computer. I came across an article on the BBC ‘Click’ technology programme explaining this new technology.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/7676552.stm

Recently, touch-screens have played a massive role in interaction with humans and technology. Some examples include the Apple iPhone, TomTom, Nintendo DS, mobile phones, and projector screens used in schools and universities. However, Microsoft’s new Surface touch-responsive device takes this to a new level.

Microsoft’s new tabletop Surface which was launched on April 17, 2008 allows users to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motion, hand gestures, or actual objects. Surface is to be used in restaurants, hotels, retail, and public entertainment venues for customers to use. For example they can order a drink by a touch of the finger and the Surface device will know when you need a re-fill so that service will be available for the customer. This is done using infrared light passing from the Surface device through the glass and recognizing when the glass becomes empty. A demonstration is shown here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DG3_2lvoL8A&eurl=http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2008/10/computer-table-hybrid-knows-wh.html

Surface can also recognizes physical objects that are placed on it for example a mobile phone; which if placed on the surface table will instantly be recognized. Therefore, you can view all photos stored on your phone, move through them by dragging your finger across each image, enlarge them, re-size, flip them around and even swap photos with a friend. You can also browse through thousands of play lists and listen to endless music.

The Microsoft Surface is basically a Windows Vista PC placed inside this tabletop device. The device uses a projector with various cameras to project certain images or things placed on it and records reflections of infrared light from human fingertips. With this, users can interact with the device directly by touching and dragging objects such as a paintbrush across the screen to draw or paint a picture. Therefore, using real-life objects, which are then projected into the device and used or manipulated electronically; making it a simpler task to carry out. This is a video that shows what different methods the Surface uses to interact with humans: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/7678104.stm

I think the Surface is a device that individually uses all the necessary components a computer needs (e.g. mouse, keyboard) to run in a small and compact tabletop touch-screen device; however, used in a much simpler way with hand gestures. I think this technology has endless potential and use. In conclusion, I think the Surface can not only help people make their day-to-day lifestyles easier and help big organizations in moving forward in a positive way, but it can also help disabled people who cannot have the same opportunities to learn. It can help these people to interact more and learn in a more efficient and quicker way. In schools and universities, it can play a big part in students interacting and taking part. It can broaden minds and help people with their work, whether they are a student or a business and help people all over the world.

What do i want to get out of this course?

As well as passing, i would like to gain a better understanding in all aspects of the Multimedia course as a whole. This will include the animation, film production, pixelation, audio-visual, and other parts included in the course.

Besides this i want to meet new people and make new friends. I would also like to take advantage of all the facilities NTU has to offer for e.g. the gym, sports, or even the various societies.

Lastly, i would like to enjoy my three years at NTU and on this Multimedia course, have fun, and meet new people.

Have fun! Byeee
